With 1.4 million members in 49,000 clubs worldwide, Lions International is a global network of caring individuals making a difference in nearly every country on Earth. Every year, our Lions and Leos improve the lives of hundreds of millions of people through our transformative initiatives.
Our History
Lions Clubs International was founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones in Chicago, Illinois. His vision was simple but powerful: to unite individuals who wanted to improve their communities and the world. Over the decades, Lions International has grown into one of the world’s largest service organizations. Milestones in our history include:
1925: Helen Keller challenges Lions to become “knights of the blind.”
1945: Lions International participates in drafting the United Nations Charter.
1968: The establishment of the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF).
1987: Lions Clubs welcome women into membership.
Today, Lions International continues to thrive, guided by Melvin Jones’ timeless vision.

The Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is the cornerstone of our humanitarian efforts. Since its founding in 1968, LCIF has empowered Lions members by providing over $1.2 billion in grant funding. These grants enable us to expand our services and make a global impact. Together, we’re creating lasting change.
Our Mission: Our mission is to empower Lions clubs, volunteers, and partners to:
Improve health and well-being.
Strengthen communities.
Support those in need through impactful humanitarian services and grants.
Encourage peace and international understanding.
We fulfill this mission daily, wherever Lions serve.
